Alexander Malcolm "Sandy" Smith was born Jan. 1, 1858 in Inverness, Scotland. At the age of sixteen he served an apprenticeship with the Hudson's Bay Company in Canada for three years. He made gold strikes in the Klondike and Nome, built several roadhouses (including Snyder House at Flat City) and discovered oil seepages that are now the United States Naval Oil Reserve. Sir George Hubert Wilkins (b. October 31, 1888, Hallett, South Australia-d. Dr. Alfred H. Brooks, born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, July 18, 1871, died in Washington, D.C., November 22, 1924. American geologist and geographer who joined the U.S. Geological Survey for Alaska in 1898 and for whom the Brooks Mountain Range is named.
