This collection includes several accounts of the story of the Scattergood Hostel including a slide show by Robert Berquist; hostel records; news bulletins and newspaper clippings; American Friends Service Committee materials including lists of refugees and residents, correspondence, reports, press releases, newsletters, policies and photocopies of photographs; research materials collected by A.M. Luick-Thrams including oral history interviews with Ernst Somers, Walter Shostal, Camilla Hewson Flintermann, Nicole Hackel, Lillian Pemberton Willoughby, Pierre Shostal and Doris Holly Peters; published articles about the Scattergood Hostel including a paper prepared by Carl L. Fredericksen about the proposed Japanese-American relocation center; and correspondence (1943-1983) related to this proposed center.

The Scattergood Hostel was opened in 1939 to house refugees from Hitler's Europe. The Scattergood Quaker boarding school had closed in 1931 due to financial difficulties brought on by the Great Depression. When World War II broke out the American Friends Serivce Committee (AFSC) needed places where refugees could go for a short time until they were able to find a permanent place in American society.
