The Pennsylvania Humanities Council designated the year 1985 as "The Year of the Pennsylvania Writer." The PHC funded projects in eight locations throughout the Commonwealth to gain appreciation, understanding, and recognition for past and present Pennsylvania writers. Delta Sigma Rho was founded in Chicago in 1906 as an honorary forensics society by representatives from eight Midwestern universities. By 1956 it had over 80 national chapters. Tau Kappa Alpha was founded in 1908 as an honorary forensics fraternity in Indianapolis, Ind., by Butler University student Oswald Ryan.
