This series comprises records related to all aspects of the administration of Lutheran Film Associates (LFA) and its predecessor and related organization, Lutheran Church Productions, Inc. (LCP). The records are from 1951-2004, but the bulk date from 1951-1997. Records types include handwritten and typewritten business correspondence, memoranda, legal documents including contracts, affidavits, and powers of attorney; audit reports, certificates of incorporation, by-laws, minutes, reports, proposals, project treatments, promotional material, news articles, news releases, scripts, and handwritten notes. Subject matter pertains to a variety of issues related to administration of LFA, as well as issues regarding specific LFA projects, projects submitted to LFA for consideration, and projects LFA considered producing itself. Authors of correspondence include Dr. Paul C. Empie, Robert E.A. Lee, Henry Endress, and Walter A. Jensen, This series is arranged into three subseries: Lutheran Church Productions, Inc., Luther-Film G.m.b.H, and Lutheran Film Associates. Lutheran Church Productions, Inc. (LCP) Record types in this subseries include incorporation certificates, bylaws, contract, agreements, powers of attorney, affidavits, business correspondence, and reports. Subject matter pertains to the creation of LCP corporation; appointments of persons to represent LCP interests; and legal agreements between LCP and the German company created to produce Martin Luther, Luther-Film G.m.b.H., pertaining to ownership of Luther films and distribution of assets in the event Luther Film G.m.b.H dissolved. Correspondence subject matter includes, among others, financing arrangements with the restricted-use marks; production matters for Martin Luther and updates on filming; resignation of Henry Endress as executive secretary of LCP; reactions to Martin Luther, and general business matters for the corporation, including notice of meetings, and updates on production and distribution issues. Examples of subject matter for legal correspondence include ownership of Luther film, music rights for television broadcasts of Luther film, and distribution contracts. Remaining records in the subseries comprise mainly reports submitted to LCP by Henry Endress and Robert E.A. Lee that pertain to Martin Luther film production, release, distribution, and promotion. Luther Film G.m.b.H This German corporation was created specifically as a vehicle through which to produce Martin Luther with restricted-use marks at a lower cost than LCP could with regular marks. Record types in this subseries include certificates of incorporation and amendments, applications, minutes and reports, audit reports, memoranda, correspondence, affidavits, and legal opinions. Subject matter pertains to formation and incorporation of Luther-Film G.m.b.H., financial status of the corporation, and a lawsuit brought against Luther-Film G.m.b.H. by GEMA, which was the German performing rights organization. It should be noted that the audit reports are incomplete and this series only includes those for 1959-1960, 1963-1971, 1977, 1978-1979, and 1980. Lutheran Film Associates (LFA) This is the largest subseries of this record series and is further divided into the sub-subseries: incorporation, correspondence, financial records, past LFA productions, other project/productions, and general subject files. Record types include certificates of incorporation, bylaws, contracts and agreements, business correspondence, audit reports, financial records, memoranda, copyright certificates, project proposals, inventories, scripts, printed reports, and promotional material. Examples of general subject matter include incorporation of LFA, LCP dissolution, projects brought to LFA for consideration, and film inventories for LFA. There are several folders that pertain to LFA efforts to recoup monies owed them from United Entertainment, a distribution company that declared bankruptcy. Other records pertain to specific LFA productions. Subject matter for these records includes distribution agreements, copyright, film prints, videocassette production, copy requests, and requests for showing.
