Television Release Correspondence, Agreements, Press Releases 1928-1963; 1953-1960

Records in this series pertain principally to television broadcasts of Martin Luther, the film produced by Lutheran Church Productions, Inc. (LCP), a predecessor of Lutheran Film Associates. The records are from 1928-1963, but the bulk date from 1953-1960. Record types include typewritten and handwritten business correspondence, memoranda, telegrams, news releases, meeting minutes, and news articles. Even though subject matter pertains to television broadcasts of the film, the bulk of the records pertain to an incident involving WGN-TV, Chicago, Illinois. WGN entered into an agreement with LCP to broadcast Martin Luther on December 21, 1956, but on December 19, 1956, it cancelled the broadcast citing protests received from persons believing the film attacked the Catholic church and was in general anti-Catholic. Most of the records in this series are correspondence, news releases, and newspaper articles related to the controversy. The one item from 1928 is in folder 2 and is a review in the National Board of Review Magazine for the 1927 German silent film Luther.
