Journal of a tour of Civil War battlegrounds, 1866.

Journal written by Lossing from Mar. 22 to May 10, 1866, while touring battlegrounds along the Carolina and Georgia coasts and in Louisiana, Mississippi, interior Georgia, and Tennessee. The journal covers the beginning but not the conclusion of the tour, which was probably the last of several tours in prepration for his "Pictorial History of the Civil War," published that same year. The drawings are integrated with the texts of the notes, each of which covers several days of touring. The pen-and-ink drawings in the journal, were probably rough sketches made on the scene. Nearly all of the drawings in the journal are reproduced as wood-engravings in the published work. Some of the notes are written in he form of letters to Lossing's wife.
