James Hanway collection [microform], 1823-1882.

This collection contains correspondence; drafts of newspaper articles; writings entitled Literary extracts and scientific studies reflecting interest in geology, natural philosophy, & metaphysics; writings called Original essays on man and things discussing a journey through the United States and critiques of the defense of slavery; writings documenting events pertaining to "Bleeding Kansas"; character sketches of prominent individuals such as Colonel James Montgomery; correspondence of William Stitt, some discussing John Hanway's service in the 3rd Regiment, Company A, of the Kansas Militia; and writings on slavery, Prohibition, territorial Kansas, John Brown, agriculture, mythology, & other topics. Correspondence deals with military matters, Brown, the Civil War, the Kansas Insane Asylum (Osawatomie), political affairs, and personal matters. Bound volumes contain memoranda books, 1856-1882; original poetry; records of the Mt. Gilead Congregational Church (Greeley, Kan.), 1859-1882; literary extracts & scientific studies; original essays; and a docket from James Hanway's tenure as mayor of New Custine (Darke County), Ohio, 1851-1852. The collection includes an account of the Pottawatomie Creek Massacre dated May 24, 1856, naming the victims, and a letter dated July 18, 1859, discussing his experience at the Wyandotte Constitutional Convention. Much of the correspondence is from William Stitt.

James Montgomery came to Mound City (Linn County) Kansas from South Carolina. He was a pioneer, soldier, and military officer. He served during the Civil War in the 2nd Carolina Colored Infantry on the Union side. He was with the 3rd Kansas Infantry when they opposed General Sterling Price's raid into Kansas during the Kansas-Missouri border troubles, 1855-1861.
