Letter, 1890 October 29.

The collection contains a contemporary handwritten transcription of a letter sent from Calderon Carlisle to Sir Julian Pauncefote regarding the case of the "Layward," and the territorial rights of the United States in the Bering Sea. Pauncefote was the British Ambassador to the United States at the time. He was assigned to the post to achieve a diplomatic solution to the Bering Sea controversy over seal hunting rights. The controversy was eventually settled by an international court in 1911. The letter is addressed to Washington, D.C., and dated October 29, 1890.
