George S. Grunert photograph collection, 1898-1945.

General description of the collection: The George S. Grunert photograph collection includes two photos of Battery B, 2nd U.S. Artillery in 1898 and several of the 11th U.S. Cavalry on the Mexican Border, 1911. There are photographs of the Army War College Class and Staff in 1919 and then in 1933, 1934, 1935, and 1936. There are photos of the Command and General Staff College Class and faculty in 1932. Most of the photos deal with his service in the Philippines and at various stateside posts where he was stationed or visited during his service with the Eastern Defense Command during WWII, notably Iceland and Governor's Island, New York.

Lieutenant General (LTG) Grunert entered the ranks as an enlisted man in 1898 and in 1901 was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant of cavalry. Prior to World War I, he served in the Philippines, and Cuba as well as in the United States. During the War, Grunert served with General Headquarters in France and with I Corps, returning to the United States in 1919 to enter the Army War College.
