Newel P. Wood Letters, 1864.

Collection includes three letters from Corporal Newel P. Wood in Georgia to his aunt. Letters are dated 25 June, 2 August, and 15 September 1864. Also included is one 12 May 1864 letter from another soldier in Cairo that mentions Wood. The letters include information on camp life as well as the members and actions of the 12th Illinois Infantry and the 15th Wisconsin Infantry. A tintype of Corporal Wood has been transferred to the photograph collection.

Stoneman was born on a family farm in Busti, New York, the first child of ten. His parents were George Stoneman Sr., a lumberman and justice of the peace, and Catherine Rebecca Cheney Aldrich. He studied at the Jamestown Academy and entered the United States Military Academy in 1842; his roommate at West Point was future Confederate General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson.
