Papers, 1944-1966 1944-1945.

The collection consists of papers relating to Polly P. Sharp's time in Anchorage and work with the U.S.O. Included are a copy of her memoir about life in "The Bee Hive", copies of the articles she wrote about the local U.S.O. activities for the Anchorage Times, and a copy of an article about her Alaskan adventures that appeared in a newspaper in Atlanta, Georgia.

Polly P. Sharp came to Alaska in the summer of 1941. She worked at Fort Richardson and for the Clerk of the District court before accepting a position as assistant Director of the Anchorage U.S.O., where she had been a volunteer. While living in Anchorage, she shared a house with several other women which became known as "The Bee Hive" and functioned as an unofficial auxiliary U.S.O. Polly P. The United Service Organizations (USO) was incorporated in the state of New York on February 4, 1941, as a joint operation by the YMCA, YWCA, National Catholic Community Service, the National Jewish Welfare Board, the Traveler's Aid Association, and the Salvation Army, to provide religious, spiritual, social, welfare, educational, and entertainment services to men and women in the armed forces during World War II.
