Tarea Hall Pittman was a native of Bakersfield, Calif., a member of one of the pioneer families of Kern County. She received her B.A. degree from San Francisco State College and a Master of Social Welfare degree from the University of California, Berkeley. While attending Berkeley she began a career in radio, founding the program "Negroes in the news" with which she would be affiliated for many years. Always active in civic affairs, Pittman accepted an appointment as field secretary for the NAAC...

Wilkins edited the KANSAS CITY CALL, a Black newspaper, from 1923 to 1931. Wilkins became Assistant Secretary of the NAACP in 1931 and became Executive Secretary in 1955.
