Thanking him for a generous gift (David Allan's drawing, Cotter's Saturday Night), sending his "grateful compliments" to Allan, and discussing the picture. Enclosing (not present) two songs, one by "a lady." Also enclosing (not present) an epigram intended for his "much-valued friend" Mr. (Alexander) Cunningham, and inquiring after the fate of the last two songs sent by Burns.
