Papers and photographs, 1940-1994.

Papers and photographs of Stephen J. Piotrowski, pertaining to his service as a U.S. Army soldier in Vietnam (March 1969-February 1970), as an activist in the anti-war movement at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, and as a board member of the Wisconsin Vietnam Veterans Memorial Project. The bulk of the collection documents Piotrowski's involvement in the Wisconsin Vietnam Veterans Memorial Project (also known as the Highground Veterans Memorial) and spans its formal inception in 1984 through 1993. There are letters written by Piotrowski during military training at Ft. Campbell (Kentucky), Ft. Benning (Georgia), and Ft. Lee (Virginia) and in Vietnam serving with the 173rd Airborne Brigade. Primarily written to his parents in Amherst (Wisconsin), Piotrowski also wrote letters to his brother, Alan, who had served earlier in Vietnam. Letters written home by Alan Piotrowski during his Vietnam service with the 183rd Reconnaissance Airplane Company are also found in the collection. The collection documents Piotrowski's involvement in the Portage County Veterans for Peace organization, Vietnam Veterans Against the War, and the Dane County chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America. Included are by-laws, minutes, correspondence, membership and chapter lists, and information about a variety of educational and protest activities carried out by these organizations. There are also flyers, pamphlets, posters, and broadsides from a wide variety of other Vietnam War-era social activist organizations. Records of the Wisconsin Vietnam Veterans Memorial Project document its evolution from a Vietnam veteran memorial to one honoring all Wisconsin veterans. Project records also include correspondence and minutes of the Board of Directors; financial materials; news clippings; records concerning such fundraising activities as bike-a-thons and basketball tournaments; and materials pertaining to site selection, statue design, and memorial construction.
