Discussion includes development of his interest in folk music, folklore, and bluegrass; his educational background; including his work at the Indiana University Folklore Institute; the nature of folklore; oral history as a discipline; his start with the CMF; projects he tried during his early years as CMF director; his development as director; his decision to make the organization a supporter of popular education; the dynamics of a music museum; and comments on changes in country music from the early years forward.
