Collection of correspondence and miscellaneous documents, 1940-1945. About half the collection consists of letters to Garrett Winter from the following New-York Historical Society employees on active service: William R. Baille, Ladislaw Csierny, James J. Fisher, William Givens, Joseph Gymory, George Johnson, Vincent J. Marshall, Charles J. Miller, and George Takacs. They describe a variety of war experiences: work as a radar operator in Washington State; guarding prisoners of war in Delaware; service in India; witnessing surrender in Germany; and hospitalization for "operational fatigue, in other words, nerves." There are also letters from people in England, including five from Edward Tempest in Spofforth, North Yorkshire, describing air raids. A group of letters from 1942 discuss a ban on taking photographs in New York Harbor. A letter from a sailor on board the U.S.S. Hilary P. Jones describes conditions in Iceland. Other miscellaneous documents include ration books, V-mail, postcards, Christmas cards, and an insurance policy covering war damage.
