Harmon H. Goldstone papers, 1906-1979 (bulk 1966-1979).

Papers, 1906-1979 (bulk 1966-1979). The bulk of the collection consists of 27 volumes containing daily summaries of Goldstone's activities during his tenure as Chairman of the Landmarks Preservation Commission, and for some months afterwards. These journals, which he used as his source for information disseminated at his Monday staff meetings, as well as for later recollections and analyses, are more extensive than a typical desk calendar, and appear to cover all the activities of his office on any given day. They trace the passage of historic district designations and individual building and monument designations in all five boroughs; they also give accounts of the fights in 1968-1969 concerning the erection of a tower over Grand Central Station, and describe meetings, including one held in 1971 to discuss an idea which apparently led to the forming of the Central Park Conservancy. In addition, more than 170 Landmark Designation Reports and related materials for the years 1973 through 1979 are included, as are several documents from Goldstone's earlier work with the City Planning Commission. Some Landmark Designation Reports include photographs and/or floor plans. Historic District Designation Reports include maps and detailed descriptions of individual properties within the district. Personal and professional clippings, along with memorabilia such as the 1908 wedding scrapbook of his parents, are also among the papers.
