New York State Revolutionary War collection, 1776-1785.

Collection, 1776-1785, of correspondence, accounts, receipts, and other documents produced by members of various New York State Commissions during the Revolutionary period. There are accounts of the Commissioners of Sequestration, for the state as a whole and for Westchester County; documents related to the Commissioners of forfeiture for the Western District; accounts of the Commissioners to procure specie and sell forfeited lands; accounts of Jonathan Lawrence, in his capacity as one of the Commissioners to explore mines of lead, sulphur, etc., and as a member of several other commissions, including a commission to complete the Five Continental Battalions, and forward them to Easton, Pa.; and accounts and documents related to the Commission for detecting conspiracies in New York, and its local boards in Charlotte, Dutchess, Orange, Ulster, and Albany Counties. Commissioners represented besides Lawrence include John Sleght, Elihu Marvin, Isaac Nicolls, and William Duer. The collection includes some surveys and maps of forfeited lands, as well as accounts, correspondence, and other miscellaneous documents, including a blank form for an indenture. It also contains a letter from Egbert Benson, and material related to Barent Ten Eyck.

In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff.
