Papers, 1833- ca. 1910, pertaining to Peter McMartin and other members of the McMartin, MacLaren, and Richards families. Peter McMartin's daughter Anna married Finlay MacLaren; her daughter Harriet married George Richards. There are about 145 letters to Peter McMartin, mostly written during 1844-1849. They include 20 letters from Dudley S. Gregory, many relating to their political interests; 42 letters from Peter McMartin's brother, James, written from New Orleans, St. Louis, Milwaukee, and elsewhere, with some discussion of cholera in New Orleans in 1849; letters from Peter McMartin's father, Malcolm McMartin; from Peter McMartin's wife, Harriet McMartin; from James G. Gregory in Europe, 1846-1849, and from Daniel McIntyre of Philadelphia. Many of the business papers pertain to Peter McMartin's activities in the promotion and management of lotteries during the late 1840s and early 1850s, in company with James G. Gregory, Daniel McIntyre, Charles H. Rogers, Luke Hemenway, John W. Maury, and Benjamin P. Gregory. The collection also includes personal letters to Archibald McMartin, Peter McMartin's son, and to George Richards, the husband of Peter McMartin's granddaughter. There are also some receipts, deeds, certificates, bankbooks, passports, bills of sale for ships or shares in ships, and printed ephemera, some related to a lottery held in 1845 to benefit the Society for Establishing Useful Manufactures.
