Four volumes contains drafts of his dispatches to the Secretary of State, John M. Clayton, and include copies of his letters to various officials of Central American governments and originals of their replies, as well as correspondence with U.S. officials and European diplomats in the area. They include some printed fliers, as well as manuscript correspondence. The dispatches discuss the territorial dispute between Great Britain and Honduras about the Bay Islands, as well as other regional issues. The correspondence includes letters between Squier and George Mifflin Dallas, U.S. Minister to Great Britain, as well as various British politicians, including William Brown, Thomas Milner Gibson, and Lord Stanley (later Lord Derby). This volume also contains some material about the Honduras Interoceanic Railway Company, and another volume, dated 1857-1859, contains Squier's reports to the directors of the company in London, and their correspondence, including numerous letters from the director, R.R.R. Moore. Squier was in charge of organizing engineers to survey the location of the proposed railway in Honduras. There is also an oversize folder, containing a collection of diplomatic credentials, certificates of membership in learned societies, etc., some belonging to other members of the Squier family; they include a Nicaraguan tribute to Squier, printed on silk, and an invitation to a recepton in San Salvador in his honor, also printed on silk and embroidered. Accompanied by two boxes of manuscript bibliographies and notes by Squier's great-nephew, Frank Squier, 1938-1950.
