Records, 1899-1954. The collection consists of the order's business records, such as correspondence, accounts, membership applications, registers of attendance at annual meetings, etc., and printed ephemera issued by the order, such as annual reports, blank diplomas, membership lists, general orders, and menus and invitations for dinners held by the order. There are also scrapbooks, several kept by George Ruhlen, offprints of magazine articles, and printed pamphlets relating to the Spanish-American War, such as "The Remington typewriter afloat," illustrated with pictures of battleships, and a pamphlet issued by the American Line, which describes the commissioning of their liners during the war. The original watercolor design for the order's insignia, by Bailey, Banks & Biddle of Philadelphia, is also in the collection. Nineteen volumes of membership applications give details of the applicants' service in the Spanish-American War; some applicants add other biographical details. The collection includes some material related to state commanderies, as well as to the national commandery. There are a volume each of minutes of the Massachusetts commandery and the D.C. commandery, and a 1904 printed register of the Connecticut commandery, illustrated with photographs of members.
