Papers, 1742-1804 (bulk 1746-1780). A collection of diaries, memoranda books, receipt books and account books, kept by Phineas Stevens, and other people who frequently mention members of the Stevens family; some were probably kept by Samuel Stevens, Phineas's son. Part of the collection deals with military matters. A receipt book dated 1746 lists money paid by Stevens to his soldiers, mostly for billeting themselves in Hatfield and Rutland (Mass.). A small booklet lists Indian raids, mostly in Massachusetts, between 1746 and 1759. An account book dated 1757 deals with money spent on the sick and wounded. A notebook dated 1752-1754 contains notes about an expedition to Lake George; another dated 1779 contains references to militia activities in Massachusetts. There are also occasional reference to the expenses of billeting soldiers in account books which are otherwise concerned with personal business. The personal papers, mostly dating from after Phineas Stevens' death, include diaries, account books and receipt books, mainly dealing with business activities in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, including trade in logs and tranport of logs. There is also a deed dated 1742, and a book of notes on history.

Samuel Stevens was born July 4, 1735 in Rutland, MA, the eldest son of Captain Phineas and Elizabeth Stevens. Phineas Stevens was an original grantee of Charlestown, New Hampshire, and commander of Fort No. 4 in Charlestown from 1745-1756. Samuel Stevens served as a Lieutenant during the period of the French and Indian War, and was probably in charge of activities at Fort No. 4 from 1756 through 1760. Ten companies comprised the 12th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Militia: five from Boston, one from North Bridgewater, one from Abington, one from Weymouth, one from Stoughton, and one from Gloucester.
