Diary, May 16, 1831 - September 1, 1831, kept during a voyage to England and France. Stewart describes life on board the ship Manchester; impressions of Liverpool; the Liverpool and Manchester railway; his journey to London by stage coach; sightseeing in London, where he visited the British Museum, heard preaching at Finsbury Chapel, met Washington Irving, witnessed the procession for the opening of Parliament, and noted strong popular support for the Reform Bill. He then describes his journey to Paris, with some sightseeing along the way. In Paris he celebrated the Fourth of July with other Americans there, and was entertained by the U.S. consul, Charles Barnett, and James Fenimore Cooper. In Paris he visited the usual sights, including the morgue, and took part in the formation of an American committee to help the Poles. From Paris he went to Rouen and Le Havre, where he boarded the ship Havre for his return journey. On the way to Le Havre he met Arthur O'Connor, one of the exiled leaders of the Irish rebellion of 1798, and records extensive conversations with him. There are several references in the diary to fears about the approaching cholera epidemic.
