Papers, 1794-1809.

Papers, 1794-1809. They consist of two letter books, dated 1794-1795 and 1795-1800, and an account book, dated 1802-1809, of fees received for consular business such as ships' papers, passports, etc. All three volumes contain material in both English and Spanish. The earlier letter book contains copies of letters written on a trading voyage to Cuba and Santo Domingo, dealing with such things as disposal of cargo, instructions to captains and merchants, help or obstruction from officials, settlement of accounts, prospects of trade, etc. The merchants he wrote to include Samuel Emery and John Leamy, both of Philadelphia; James Leamy, Havana; and Pedro Juan de Erice, Havana. The second letter book includes personal letters to members of his family, as well as letters dealing with his business affairs and with his work as Spanish consul. Correspondents include those mentioned above, and also Joseph Wiseman, Newport; José Ignacio de Viar; Michael Morphy, Malaga; William Gray, Jr., and Bernardo la Costa. Members of his family include his brother, Thomas Stoughton, in New York City, as well as his son in law, José de Jaudenes, and his daughter, Matilda Stoughton de Jaudenes, who were in Philadelphia and then in Valencia and Majorca.
