Receipt book, 1835-1849, and letter book, 1834-1843. The receipt book is partly concerned with expenses related to building a house and dock at Tubby Hook in Upper Manhattan, and contains a cash summary at the end of the expenses of this project, but it also contains receipts for other expenses. The letter book contains copies of correspondence dealing with his work as superintendent of the construction of the Old Custom House in Manhattan. Thomson quarreled with the commissioners appointed to the project over his duties and compensation, and resigned his position after unsuccessfully appealing to the Secretary of the Treasury for better terms. The books contians copies of letters between Thomson and the Secretaries of the Treasury during this period, Roger B. Taney and Levi Woodbury, as well as later correspondence about money due to him from his time as superintendent.
