Letter, [1776].

Undated letter, ca. 1776, written by Thomas Digges as an American student in Great Britain and addressed to a recipient identified only as Mrs. Lee of Chester, England. Letter concerns current news of America and recent developments leading up to the American Revolution; including the open pretensions of the American colonies to political independence, the presence of George Washington's troops in New York, Washington's recent proclamation forbidding the sale of provisions to the Royal Navy or Army, etc. Digges also writes of the difficulty he has had obtaining current news and the recent confiscation of a shipment of American newspapers recently arrived at Bristol, as well as the property losses he and his nieghbors along the Potomac river have suffered in recent raids.
