Autographs and portraits: collection, 1776-1861.

Autographs and portraits, 1776-1861, collected by Aaron Vail. Vail began the collection when he was chargé d'affaires in London. All the people represented in the collection are Americans or had some significant connection to the United States. There are many personal letters and notes addressed to Vail, and a large number of letters and documents written by figures who were prominent in the American Revolution. Many documents are accompanied by lithographed or engraved portraits of their writers. The collection was originally bound in two volumes.
