Letter book, 1804-1806.

Letter book of Jacob and Thomas Walden, October 29, 1804 - November 6, 1806. The letters are to business associates in ports in the United States, Europe and the Caribbean. They discuss insurance, financial instruments, buying and selling ships, and trade in various commodities such as tobacco, molasses, cotton and wine. They often mention political events, such as the death of the British Prime Minister, Pitt, or rumors of a general European peace, and their probable impact on trade. They also discuss the blockade of Havana, as well as the risk of having ships seized by the British, and acceptable ways of demonstrating that a ship or cargo is property of a neutral. There is occasional mention of their brother, Joseph Walden, who was in Lisbon and Bordeaux and in Charleston, S.C., during the period of the letters, and of their father, Samuel Walden.
