Orderly book, 1779.

Orderly book, June 5, 1779 - July 7, 1779, for one or two Pennsylvania regiments forming part of the 2nd Brigade; perhaps for Colonel Francis Johnson's 5th Pennsylvania Regiment. The book includes general, division and brigade orders dated from Smith's Clove and the Forest of Dean, both locations near West Point. They include material on hygiene in camp, courts-martial, clothiers and stores, and recommended prices for foodstuffs. Perhaps kept by James Giles.

In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff. This special unit, the Commander in Chief's Guard, was formed on March 12, 1776 with Captain Caleb Gibbs (formerly adjutant of the 14th Continental Regiment and appointed Aid to Major General Greene) as commander.
