Orderly books, dated August 21, 1777 - December 31, 1777 and September 23, 1777 - November 5, 1777; the first is accompanied by a typed copy, the second by a partial photostat. The regiment served in the Northern Army from August 21 to November 7, and with the Main Army from November 22 on. On October 3, 1777, they were attached to Brigadier General John Paterson's brigade. They were with the Northern Army at Van Schaick's Island, Stillwater, Saratoga, Bemis Heights, and Albany; with the main army at Whitemarsh, Gulph Mills, and Valley Forge. The books include general and brigade orders, including material on courts-martial and shortages of shoes and clothing; there are also instructions on building huts for winter quarters in camp.

In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff. This special unit, the Commander in Chief's Guard, was formed on March 12, 1776 with Captain Caleb Gibbs (formerly adjutant of the 14th Continental Regiment and appointed Aid to Major General Greene) as commander.
