Orderly books, 1775-1782.

Orderly books, 1775-1782, containing headquarters orders, mainly from Boston and New York City. The first two volumes, dated 1775 from Sir William Howe's headquarters in Boston, include returns of the numbers killed, wounded and missing in the battles of Lexington and Bunker Hill. Three volumes, dated 1776-1777, from Sir William Howe's headquarters in New York City and other places in the vicinity, were kept by Henry Knight. Places mentioned include White Plains, New Rochelle, Frogs Neck [sic], Dobbs Ferry, De Lancey's Mill, Ward's house and Pelham Manor in New York, and Trenton and Brunswick in New Jersey. Two volumes kept by Stephen Kemble contain copies of orders: the first, dated 1777, includes orders issued at various places in New York and Pennsylvania, the second, dated 1778, contains copies of orders issued by Howe in New York City, mostly regarding courts martial and promotions. The remaining two volumes, dated 1781-1782, contain headquarters orders from Sir Henry Clinton, dated from New York City and Staten Island.
