Account and memorandum book, 1751-1779 and 1796-1798, kept by New Jersey merchant Daniel Holmes and others. Entries for 1751-1779 record sales and exchanges of a wide variety of goods in the vicinity of Toms River, Freehold, Middletown, and Forked River, and other locations in Monmouth County, New Jersey; including accounts for lumber, produce, livestock, leather, etc.; along with accounts for weaving, smithy work, cartage, pasturage, mowing, well digging, and agricultural labor. Also included are accounts for individual servants and employees noting their date of hire, wages, and absences or "black days." Financial memoranda include notes on loans and debts outstanding, financial disputes and agreements with associates, land purchases and sales, schooling for his children and school attendance, etc. Volume additionally includes estate accounts and inventories, 1796-1798, for the estates of Daniel, Jonathon, and William Holmes, prepared and administered under the direction of John Hotenbourgh, executor. Included are entries for Holmes's employees Martha Collwell and Lydia Watson; the local schoolmaster Samuel Bowne; Thomas Collwell, Isaac Vandorne, Christopher Vanpelt, Samuel Carhart, William and John Whitlock, William Flin, John Tice, Nathan Bears, John Wooley, Samuel Vanbracle, and various members of the Holmes family.
