Ledger and letterbook, 1815-1824.

Ledger, 1815-1824, and letterbook, 1818-1819, of New York City merchant John La Farge, containing business accounts and financial correspondence with firms and business associates in France, England, and the United States, including: La Farge & Patterson, Thomas Wilson & Co., Cheriot Wilkes & Co., D'Arcy & Didier, William D. Patterson, M. Bosange of Paris and others. Letters concern extensions of credit, insurance payments, invoices, consignments, shipping and receipt of goods (particularly cotton), and account balances with fellow businessmen. The ledger records accounts with the aforementioned firms and persons, as well as many others, including President James Monroe. Ledger includes index. Of additional note is the presence of six small watercolor drawings and pencil sketches, executed as portions of a rebus, on two pages in the back of the letterbook.
