Travel diaries, 1842 May 14-1843 Jan., kept by Robert Kelly of New York City, recording trips to Ireland, France, Switzerland, and Italy. In the earliest volume 1842 May 14-1842 July 5, kept while on tour in Ireland, where Kelly had relatives, he writes of the distressing living conditions of the Irish people, the unrest, beggars, conditions of the country, persons met, places of interest, scenery, etc. Volumes 1842 Aug.-1843 Jan. describe his trip from Paris to Italy via Switzerland, accompanied by Mrs. Kelly. The couple toured the three countries extensively and diary entries decribe, often in considerable detail, the scenery, countryside, museums, buildings, churches, shops, social and religious climate, living conditions and travel accommodations, food, local goods, and people of the numerous places visited. Entries for Venice, Munich, Rome, and Naples are quite extensive.
