Diaries, 1864-1900.

Diaries, 1864-1900, of Katharine Bayard Johnson of Tioga, New York, recording her daily life and extensive European travels. Early diaries, 1864-1871, principally describe life at the family home "Meadowbank Farms," including accounts of local news and visits with neighbors, friends, and family members in the surrounding area. Diaries for these years additionally include accounts of family trips taken within the United States to Chicago, Annapolis, Baltimore, Cincinnati, and Washington D.C. Later volumes, 1869-1900, record Ms. Johnson's European travels and describe prolonged visits to Paris, Rome, London, and the Netherlands. Detailed and extensive entries written during her annual trips abroad reflect her strong interest in art and art history, and she writes in-depth of her visits to the major galleries and exhibitions of both historical and contemporary artists, recording her personal and critical opinions of individual artists, paintings, sculptures, architectural monuments, etc. Travel diaries are written in both French and English. Volume entitled "Record of Books Read," 1868-1871, contains lengthy critical entries for books read by Ms. Johnson, who read extensively in the fields of art history and criticism, literary criticism, and travel, in addition to works of fiction, history, and geology. The list includes several books read in the original French and Italian.
