Diary, 1898 May-1898 Nov., of Private Alfred Walker Ireland, covering his period of service in the Philippines with the Astor Battery under Captain Peyton C. Marsh during the Spanish American War. Ireland describes, in considerable detail, his train ride to San Francisco, departure and voyage on the U.S.S. Newport, fall of Manila, activities, duties, daily life in the army, life in the Philipines, episodes involving comrades and incidents involving Admiral Dewey, etc. Additionally included are news clippings recounting the fall of Manila, a menu from the Philippines, a pass authorizing Ireland to cross army lines as a sentinal, and a document certifying the release of a Filipino prisoner.
