September 29, 1892 letter thanks for but declines "suggestion⁵that I should contribute to your Associated Literary Press." November 17, 1894 letter from 99 Mount Vernon Street explains a mixup in McClure's gift to him of bound volumes. He returns a duplicate and asks for a replacement. Ends by saying "I still think you are too generous towards me, I would be pleased to pay my "Scot" towards your next enterprising & entertaining Monthly!" January 23, 1895 letter from 50 State St. responds to request to name "any collectors of Lincoln pictures or Lincoln material of any kind." Ropes suggests McClure write to "T.H. Bartlett, a sculptor of this City" who "has made a great collection of likenesses of Lincoln; Bartlett has lectured on the subject of Lincoln's likenesses, and is supposed to be the best posted man we have in regard to the matter." In a postscript he praises "Miss Tarbell's Life Of Napoleon" which "gives one what we most want to know about him." February 25, 1895 letter from 50 State St. responds to McClure's letter "stating that you are preparing to use the portrait of Napoleon of which I made you a present." He informs McClure that he must "get the permission of Houghton-Mifflin & Co.; they have prefixed it to the new twelfth edition of my book entitled 'The First Napoleon'." Gives Houghton Mifflin's address (No. 4 Park Street, Boston) and adds "So far as I know, this is an original sketch, made for a snuff-box. There is something about it in the preface of the book."
