Diary and manuscript map, 1777 Sept. 2-1778 Jan. 24.

Diary kept by Gilpin while held in exile in Winchester, Virginia during the Revolution and map of Winchester (Sept. 2, 1777-Jan. 24, 1778). Taken prisoner and transported to Virginia, Gilpin recounts in his diary the circumstances leading to his imprisonment, the transport of the Quaker prisoners, life as a political prisoner, his guards, harassment by Whig mobs, behavior of the American militia, notes of Quaker meetings, and movements of military forces. The map is drawn to scale by Gilpin and includes names of householders and table of distances; addressed on the back to Ann Gilpin, Wilmington.
