Davies' letter book containing correspondence relating to the provisioning of the British ships during the American Revolution, particularly in New York waters (July 1780-Aug. 1782). Letters from Davies are mostly addressed to the Commissioners for Victualling His Majesty's Navy, London; letters received generally originated from Adm. Marriot Arbuthnot, Edm. Affleck, or Adm. Robert Digby.

Richard Howe, Earl Howe, was born in London, England, on March 19, 1726, the son of Emanuel Scrope Howe (1699-1735) and Mary Sophia Charlotte von Kielmansegg (1703-1782).
