Journal of Joshua Brookes, 1798-1803.

In 1798, Joshua Brookes, a young Englishman, came to the United States on business and remained in the States until 1803, during which time he kept a journal of his travels and adventures. At the age of 25 he, with two companions, paid a visit to George Washington at Mount Vernon. The journal provides a glimpse into the home and family life of the Washingtons, as well as recording Thomas Jefferson's characterization of the Washingtons. (Excerpt from R.W.G.
