Account books, 1816-1833.

Two account books, 1816-1831 and 1831-1833, kept by Gerard Beekman. The 1816-1831 account book includes the accounts of most of the members of the family of James Beekman (d. 1807) with the record keeper, Gerard, father of James W. Beekman. Catharine Boudinot, Mary Bayard, Cornelia Cox, and Jane Van Cortlandt are aunts of James W. Beekman and people from whom his father kept accounts relating to their incomes from Beekman legacies, etc. The account of Jane Van Cortlandt lists on 1/22/1821 the expenditure of $214 for pressing legal actions against trespassers on Beekmantown. The second account book, 1831-1833, also includes the accounts of the Beekman family. One of the early pages contains a note to the effect that Jane Van Cortlandt gave James W. Beekman $100 with which to buy a watch "as a remembrance of his affectionate aunt."
