The collection consists of 5 account books kept by Appleby from 1807 to 1831 with bulk dates 1808 to 1811. It includes a journal, May, 1814-November, 1815, recording transactions for wholesale quantities of drygoods, and bills payable and receivable while doing business with James Hewlett as Hewlett & Appleby; a daybook, August, 1815-November, 1816, recording sales of drygoods, in wholesale quantity, including a very large sale to Epenetus & Newton Platt, while doing business as Hewlett & Appleby; a daybook, 1808-1810, recording retail sales of rum, tea, tobacco, fabrics, utensils, groceries and miscellaneous items, to members of the Carman, Schouton, Ablack, Martin, Graham, Lyon, and many other families, with an inventory of goods, dated April 24, 1811, and some accounts for 1817-1818, and 1831 (the last kept in Brooklyn, New York); and 2 ledgers, 1807-1815, containing mostly transfers from other volumes, with very little detail other than the size of the account.
