Tompkins family Civil War letters, 1862-1865.

The collection contains 20 letters from J.A. Tompkins to his mother Mrs. E.H. Tompkins and one each from her nephews A.G. and Robert T. Tompkins. Topics include life in camp, the battle of Spotsylvania Court House, and his capture and imprisonment at Point Lookout in Maryland. He also mentions battles at Brandy Station and Bristoe Station, poor food and clothing, a deserter's attack on "Uncle Tom," bartering with an "old Negro woman," a sermon by Dr. [James Dabney?] McCabe and a concert in camp. An 1862 letter from Robert T. Tompkins mentions service near Vicksburg and Yankee gunboats. An 1863 letter from A.G. Tompkins mentions a rumor concerning General Rosecrans and participation in a battle [Stones River?].
