Alyce Fanslow was born on February 28, 1935. She received a B.S. (1957) in home economics education from the University of Minnesota and an M.S. (1960) in household equipment and a Ph.D. (1966) in home economics education from Iowa State University. Iowa State University first established coursework in "domestic economy" in 1872. The first instructor was Mary B. Welch, wife of University President, Adonijah Welch. In 1875 the Department of Domestic Economy was formed. It was among the earliest domestic economy departments in the United States.
