Joseph B.Mathews Journals, 1944-1949

Two journals kept by Master Sergeant Mathews in 1944 and 1945 detailing his World War II experiences with the 1st Cavalry and 38th Infantry Divisions in the Philippines. The first journal begins in November 1944 and ends in January 1945, documenting the battle for the island of Leyte. The second, which focuses on the battle for Manila, picks up in April and ends in July 1945. The journals contain newspaper clippings, photographs and maps glued onto some of the pages. Other maps and buildings have been drawn in journal. A collection of postage stamps from American occupied Philippines, Japanese occupied Philippines, China and Japan, as well as a Japanese ration stamp are attached to some pages. One of the stamps has a special VJ-Day cancellation. Seven loose items include a photograph of an unknown house, a photograph of an unknown woman, two pages from later journals (1945,1947) and newspaper clippings.
