The Milton Berle Show was an American comedy and variety show that ran from 1938-1956, with its roots in a radio program starring Eddie Cantor entitled Texaco Town in 1936. The show hired Fred Allen as host and changed its name to Texaco Star Theater in 1938. The program aired on both radio and television in 1948 and 1949, then became solely a television show from 1948-1956. The Milton Berle Show Records, dated 1936-1956, includes 256 original scripts and 53 revised and duplicate scripts that represent comedy and variety radio and television from the mid-20th century. In addition to the scripts, there are 440 signed original contracts and related payroll records. All of the material is from various shows produced for the Texas Company (Texaco) and produced on both radio and television under the names Texaco Town , Texaco Star Theater , the Buick-Berle Show , and The Milton Berle Show , as well as the Jimmy Durante Show , a similar variety program that aired on alternate Saturday evenings from the Milton Berle Show during the 1954-1955 season.
