John Ross papers, 1944-1945.

General description of the collection: The John Ross papers consist of sixty V-mails written by Ross to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Ross of Albany, NY, and Polly Ross of Philadelphia, PA, from 10 April 1944 to 12 April 1945. The letters talk about his trip across the Atlantic Ocean to England, activities in camp in England, and his non-combat duties during the campaigns through Europe. Ross commented about the 1994 presidential election and news reports submitted by Harrison Baldwin.

John Ross was born October 3, 1790 in Alabama. He was one-eight Cherokee, seven-eights Scottish. He grew up and was educated in a traditional school in Kingston, Tennessee. At the age of nineteen, he began his political career with the Cherokee Nation. In 1809, Ross was entrusted by Indian Agent Return Meigs to go to the Arkansas Cherokees.
