Ethel L. Heins was born in New York City and worked as a librarian for many years; at the New York Library from 1938-1943; at the Boston Public Library from 1955-1962 and in the Lexington Public schools between 1962-1974. She was editor of Horn Book Magazine from 1974-1984, co-founder and board member of Children's Literature of New England from 1968-1971 and adjunct professor at the Center for the Study of Children's Literature, Simmons College, MA.
