Typed copy of a letter from W.F. Thornton to his wife, Bettie, written from "York Town" and dated June 11, 1861, describing the participation of his unit (possibly the 3rd Company, Richmond Howitzers) at the Battle of Big Bethel in which he reports that they killed and wounded many of the enemy. He also writes about seeing the old Revolutionary War battlefield at Yorktown. Included is a film negative copy of the letter. 1856 pocket diary (entries are actually for the year 1862) of Francis C. Fitzhugh mentioning his March 15 mustering and on the following day going into barracks at the University of Va., battle at Port Republic in June 1862, and various marches and camping places throughout the year. Many diary entries are for amounts of money. Letter from F.C. Fitzhugh, written May 10, 1863 from Howards Grove Hospital, Richmond, Va., to Dr. J.L (James Lawrence) Cabell at the General Hospital, Charlottesville, requesting transfer to Charlottesville. Cabell's response, on the verso of the letter and dated May 13, indicates he has abundant room and approves the proposed transfer. Special Order No 102, dated November 3, 1863, detailing Private F.C. Fitzhugh to act as clerk of the General Court Martial ... of the 2d Corps A.N.V. Ca. 1864 pass permitting F.C. Fitzhugh to go to Gordonsville, Orange County, Va., signed A.W. Garber, commanding Staunton Artillery. Various furloughs dated 1865 are written on verso of pass. Pocket diary principally from the period October 1864-April 1865, but with other wartime and pre- and postwar dates, describing in some detail events around the time of the Confederate surrender in April 1865. February 23, 1900, edition of the Madison News (Madison, Va.) with partial transcript of two letters written by Frank Fitzhugh given to the newspaper by Sheriff D.M. Pattie. The letters were written to Fitzhugh's brother, Catlett Fitzhugh, and describe events at the Battle of the Wilderness, principally the actions of Frank Fitzhugh's artillery battery from April 14 to May 10. The newspaper reports that it will have to print the letters as a continued piece in several issues. Clipping from the March 9, 1900, Madison News, with more of Fitzhugh's letters describing events in May-June (Cold Harbor) and October 1864 (Cedar Creek). Fitzhugh writes that "Garber's battery is one of the hardest battery's in service, and I have but little love for it."

Frank Fitzhugh, Orange County private in Carrington's Charlottesville Artillery and Barger's Staunton Artillery. Information extracted from "Confederate Soldiers" (detailed on a genealogy website) indicates he was wounded in the left thigh at Chancellorsville and was in and out of hospitals for various ailments during his army service.
