Various files relating to the history of Base Hospital 21, the unit's service in World War I, and the activities of its veterans, 1917. Included are fragmentary files of the unit commander, surgeon Fred T. Murphy and other items once in the possession of another surgeon of the unit, Malvern B. Clopton. Three registers of radiology patients from the British Army at the (12th General?) hospital in Rouen, France, 1914-1917, the allied unit relieved by Base Hospital 21 in 1917. The record group includes correspondence, documents, picture albums, reports, personnel records, medical records and material from reunions as late as 1967. The Rouen Post contains obituaries, profiles and reminiscences of the personnel of Base Hospital 21, both doctors and Red Cross Nurses. From 1942 on the World War II unit, General Hospital 21 is covered in The Rouen Post.

Base Hospital 19 began in 1916, when 11 Rochester area physicians formed a unit of the Medical Corps Reserve. By 1917, when the unit was mobilized, 134 doctors, nurses and enlisted men from the Rochester area were ready. The unit reached Vichy, France, in June 1918, and established Base Hospital No. 19, a 2,000 bed facility. The hospital served over 11,000 patients during the 6 months it operated.
